Nichols Then v.s Today
By Charlie Petrick
Nichols was very different today than it was before. There were many differences, but there were also many differences. The first room was the art room. The picture I found of the old art room was in the 1940’s. As you can see the somewhat look alike, if not really alike. Some differences there were, was the tables were clearly a lot smaller, than the tables we use today in the art room. But you can also see the art room looks basically the same. In the 1940’s picture there are art projects on the wall and the ceiling. Today in the art room we all know there are also art projects on the wall and the ceiling. They are also currently using the same room today as they used for the 1940’s room.
The room that was surprisingly looks similar was the library. The reason I find this surprising is because recently we just added a new loft space, which was a huge addition. So you would think the library would look more different today. But I was surprised on how they still have the same mural as they did in the 1940’s. Some differences that I noticed were, the tables are rearranged differently, and the bookshelves are also rearranged differently. Something interesting that I noticed was there is still the same pattern on the floor of the library, but there is less rows of the pattern, and the rows are a lot thicker.
The room that had major differences was the office. As you can the office looks very different in many ways. What I am assuming is that the office in 1943 was used for a different room, most likely a classroom. A huge difference that is portrayed is the mural is not in the current office today. The history behind it, is really fascinating. Apparently the mural needed repairs and nichols shipped it to get fixed. The mural was never shipped back, and many were unpleased. And the mural today is worth over 100,000 dollars. Some other differences is there are no tables used as desk in the office currently used today. And instead of having the mural there is nichols designs on the wall. These classrooms have changed the most and stayed somewhat the same as how they previously were. But as these rooms changed they are still a big part of our history at Nichols.
